Georg Josef von Brentano

baron Georg Josef von Brentano (d. December 20, 1798) - German baron and diplomat in French and Swedish service.

In 1788, the Swedish ambassador in France, Erik Magnus Staël von Holstein, brought Georges von Brentano to Sweden to fulfill a special mission in Istanbul. (1789-1791). At the beginning of December 1788 he went secretly from Paris to meet secretly with King Gustav III of Sweden and discuss details of future cooperation. The initiative came from the German Baron himself.

French Foreign Ministry Armand Marc de Montmorin Saint-Hérem, when he learned about the whole matter, tried to make it difficult to cross the German from French to Swedish. Staël von Holstein was convinced that France would lead its "ally" - Turkey to ruin, as the Swedes treated Turkey - an ally against Russia, much more seriously, so he tried under the noses of the French, warned the Turks. De Montmorin suspected the Swedes of this intention and tried to interfere with his mission.

The Swede of the Constantinople, Gerhard Johan von Heidenstam, prepared, despite the difficulties of the French embassy, the appropriate conditions for the mission of von Brentano.

On April 21, 1789 von Brentano entered Nice on a ship bound for Turkey. Letters for Brentano were translated by Turkish expert Ignatius Moudragea d'Ohsson. D'Ohsson advised the baron to give the giant vase a diamond-framed portrait of Gustav III. Erik Magnus Staël von Holstein ordered such a portrait for 13,500 lira in The Hague. Bibliography
