He completed his secondary school in his hometown and later studied literature and Albanian in Pristina. After graduation, he began his work as a journalist. Discharged from work, he joined the UÇK and fought in one of the squads.

For many years he has written and published his poetry. He is also the author of the drama. He works as a journalist for Albanian and foreign media. Despite his young age, Kelmendi has already published 17 books in his country and abroad (eg in Romania, India, France, Greece, Germany, Turkey). His poems are translated into 22 languages, many of which are included in literary anthologies of various countries.
