Old Grand Theater in Lodz
Old Grand Theater in Łódź - non-existent Lodz theater; was at ul. Konstantynowska 14 (now Legionów Street).
The building was designed in 1901 by Adolf Zeligson. Grand Theater built on order of Fryderyk Sellin was a phenomenon in industrial Łódź. It had a magnificent neo-Renaissance facade and the largest theater hall in Poland, hosting 1,250 spectators. It was opened on September 28, 1901, and Henryk Sienkiewicz and Henryk Siemiradzki celebrated their great feast.
The first director of the theater was Henryk Grubiński. The stage was originally supposed to be performed by a Polish band, but it turned out that Polish actors were not able to maintain such a large building and began to sublet it to other groups. After 1905 Jews and Germans came more and more frequently. The greatest Jewish artists of today were present here.
The building burned down on October 20, 1920.
