Hunfridd was the margrave of Istria from 799 to about 804 when Prince Jan began to rule Istria and according to some sources the Prince of Friuli from 799 to 808. He was the founder of a family called the Hunfrids.

Hunfridd appeared in Istria as a marchio in 799 and the same year Eryk died.

He was Alaman and Earl of Recife, where he found himself in 806 and 808. Based on his presence in the libri memoriales of the monasteries of Reichenau and Sankt Gallen, he is assumed to have married Hitta (Hilda) of the Udalriching family and probably Gerard's niece or nephew Vinzgouw, and thus his cousin or niece Erik Hunfridd. On the basis of the same memorial books, he was probably the father of Adalbert, his successor in Rec, Odalry, who became Count of Barcelona in another part of the Franciscan state, and Hunfrid II, who became dux super Redicam (Prince of Recession), and father of the Hunfords of the later dukes of Swabia. .
