United Press International was founded in 1958 by a merger of two press agencies: Edward Willis Scripps (1907) and William Randolph Hearst (1909). UPI has been a dangerous opponent of AP for many years. In the year of its inception, UPI launched its first self-messaging system for radio networks. UPI worked with many prominent American commentators: Walter Cronkite, Harrison Salisbury, and Helen Thomas. The UPI has been instrumental in introducing new computer techniques to convey information. After the era of effective rivalry with AP UPI, it lost much of its prestige both in the United States and internationally. In 1982 began a series of ownership changes caused by financial troubles. Srcipps - Hearst's Alians sold it to Media News Corporation in Nashville, and in 1988 the agency acquired the World News Wire Group, and in 1992 UPI purchased the Middle East Broadcasting Center in Saudi Arabia.
