Gerar (גְּרָר) - a city that scientists identify with one of the mounds: Tell Jam, Tell Abu Hureir, Tell el-Sharia or Tell el-Tuwail, located between Gaza and Beer Sheba. The city's name was not certified in any source except for several books of the Old Testament. According to the Book of Genesis, the city belonged to the Philistines, but from an academic point of view this is anachronism, because the land on which it is situated was conquered by these Sea Peoples in the 11th century BC. In the days of Abraham and Isaac Gerar king Abimelech ruled. In its vicinity were grazing patriarchs (Genesis 2,6; 26,1-12), and the issue of using the nearby well was the cause of the disputes between the shepherds and the shepherds Isaac (Genesis 21:25; 26,15-23). Outside Genesis, the name of the city appears in the Second Book of Chronicles (14: 12-13). The message relates to the escape of Zerach Kuszyty (Osorkona I?), Whom King Asa is pursuing from Gerach to Maresa. In Byzantine times, the city was one of the royal residences and was called Saltus Gereriticus.
