Nikolai Putilov

Nikolai Putilov was born in 1820, died 18 April 1880 in Petersburg, Russia), a Russian entrepreneur, owner of Putilovsky.

He came from a small nobility. In 1840 he graduated from the Maritime Cadet Corps, where he then taught.

In 1854, at the command of Tsar Nicholas I, he undertook the production of small warships for the Baltic Fleet. Successful construction and efficient production of ships brought him recognition of the authorities. He took over several metallurgical plants in Finland (then part of Russia), where he developed high quality steel.

In 1863, together with several partners, he organized metallurgical plants, later named his name - Zakłady Putiłowskie. He began to produce not only steel but also machinery, including military. From 1868 he also produced railway rails. He led Putilov's plants to great development, and to occupy one of the leading places in this industry in Russia as well as in Eurasia. Bibliography
