Screensaver

Screensaver - A computer program designed to increase the failure time of a monitor by turning it off or filling it constantly, often randomly, with varying patterns or images. Today screen savers play a major role in entertainment.

In CRT monitors, images are generated by electron beam bombardment of phosphors. While displaying the image, some of its fragments (such as the Microsoft Windows startup bar) remain displayed the same way as older monitor models could permanently damage ("burn out") the luminescence in these locations and bring about the so- "ghost images" - these snippets may remain visible even if the computer does not display them.

A screen saver after a specified period of time in which the user has not moved the mouse or pressed any key on the keyboard, can turn off the screen or plot different curves, display images or subtitles, or otherwise force the screen to refresh continuously. This prevents the burning of the phosphor. That's why the English name, literally translated, means screen saver.

Contemporary CRT screens are much less prone to this type of vulnerability. LCD screens used on all laptops and more and more desktops are immune to this effect. Using a screen saver instead of shutting down your monitor actually results in a darker screen.

An additional feature of screensavers can be to automatically protect a workstation's password when the user is not active (ie probably absent). Some screen savers activate useful features, such as scanning a drive for antivirus software. Action Microsoft Windows

If the system detects an idle time longer than the time specified in the control panel, it checks that the active program is a regular program (not a different saver) by sending a so called " "WM_SYSCOMMAND message" with the argument "SC_SCREENSAVE". If the program calls the standard system function (DefWindowProc), then the screen saver is run in the control panel.

The screensaver itself is a normal program, but instead of the standard EXE extension it has an SCR extension. In addition, this program should react differently depending on the parameter that the system will call it: Atari

As one of the first screensavers to appear in eight-byte Atari computers, system-enforcing color shifts in the absence of a computer lasting several minutes (different times depending on the model) stored in the system ROM of the computer.
