Coventry Carol

Coventry Carol (Carol of Coventry) - a 16th-century work. It was first performed in Coventry as a mystery: The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. Art presents the birth of Christ according to the Gospel of St. Matthew. Roth tells the story of Herod and orders him to slaughter innocents. Mary laments the dangers threatening Jesus. Only this carol has survived.

The oldest known author who worked on her text was Robert Croo in 1534, and the oldest print with a notation came from 1591. Kenneth Leighton created his own version of this carol. It is not known who really wrote it.
