Enzyme unit
Enzyme unit (enzyme unit, U) - unit of enzyme activity introduced in 1964 by the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Nomenclature Committee. Defined by the Enzyme Commission in 1961. One U is the amount of enzyme catalyzing the conversion of 1 μmol of substrate in 1 minute. Common conditions are: temperature 30 ° C, pH data and maximum substrate saturation.
Since the minute is not an SI, it is recommended to use katala for the determination of enzyme activity (since 1978).
1 U = 1/60 μkatala = 16.67 nanocastal.
The U-enzyme unit has nothing to do with the IU (International Unit), a measure of the activity of biologically active substances.
