Gilbert Guillaume


Gilbert Guillaume (born 4 December 1930, Bois-Colombes), French lawyer and diplomat, judge of the International Court of Justice.

He studied at the University of Paris and at the Institute of Political Science in Paris and the National School of Public Administration. He worked as a government official in the foreign affairs ministry, has repeatedly represented France at international conferences, particularly devoted to international aviation and maritime law. In 1979-1987 he was the director of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He performed, among others. the role of the delegate of France in the Sixth Committee (on Legal Affairs) of the UN General Assembly and the head of the French delegation to the Third United Nations Conference on the Codification of the Law of the Sea (Montego Bay, 1982).

Since 1980 he has been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Member of the Arbitration Tribunal of the OSCE, President of the French International Law Society, Honorary Chairman of the French Law Society and Law of the Cosmos, member of the International Law University and other French and foreign scientific societies. He directs the Institute of Aeronautics and Space Law at the University of Leiden.

Since 14 September 1987 he was the judge of the International Court of Justice (replacing the deceased Judge Ladreit de Lacharrière); He was elected to the next term of office in 1991 and 2000. His 9-year term was to expire in 2009, but he resigned in November 2004, succeeding judge Ronny Abraham, in February 2005. In the years 2000-2003 he was the President of the Court. He directed, among others. ad hoc chambers on border disputes between El Salvador and Honduras and Benin and Niger.
