Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization


Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) is an international governmental organization that monitors stocks and manages fisheries in the waters of the Northwest Atlantic.

Founded in 1979 as the successor of the International Commission for Northwest Atlantic Fisheries, ICNAF (International Commission of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries). In its Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in Northwest Atlantic Fisheries, the organization identified as its task: the optimal use, rational management and conservation of fish stocks through international consultations and cooperation in the above-mentioned waters.

Organizing bodies international cooperation

For fishing fleets such as the European Union, NAFO allows catches of certain fishing quotas under TACs. The EU and NAFO jointly control compliance with these limits.
