Hovedøya

Hovedøya Hovedøya - ruiny klasztoru

Hovedøya is an island in Norway, in Oslofjord, in the administrative boundaries of Oslo. The island's surface is approximately 0.5 km².

On the island there are ruins of a monastery, founded on 18 May 1147 by the monks of Kirkstead Abbey in Lincolnshire, England. The monastery was burned in 1532, and the preserved stones were used for the construction of the Akershus Fortress. Our foundations and parts of the walls have survived.

Several buildings have been preserved on the island in the past for military purposes.
