Island of loving lemurs

The Island of the Loving Lemurs - a collection of twenty-eight travel essays by Polish writer-traveler Arkady Fiedler published in 1957 and illustrated by the author.

In the book, the author describes the life, social relations and culture of the indigenous people of Madagascar - Malgasy - and the influence of the social and economic influx of white people in Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Among the numerous descriptions of native fauna to the foreground is the warm, cordial relationship of the author with the lemurs kept as domesticated animals. The author presents the original Malagasy tribes from the European point of view as full of unclean superstitions (fadi), which make the life and death of members of the community very unpredictable. Another observation is the specific rhythm of work, rather of frequent rest (mipetraka), which was unmanageable by colonists trying to motivate the population to work harder.
