Pawel Chmielewski (priest)
Paweł Chmielewski (born 2 January 1889 in Unieszewo, died 22 January 1945 in Klebark Wielkie) - Servant of God of the Catholic Church, Catholic priest, activist of Warmia.
He was born into a rural school teacher. After graduation in 1909 he began his studies at the Seminary in Braniewo. He was ordained priest on February 28, 1915, after which he took office in Klebark Wielki. In his youth he paid a vow of poverty and warned him. He was involved in the lives of parishioners, especially the poorest and most needy. He helped get the apartment, the poorest children bought shoes and clothes for First Communion, supported the elderly and deserted. In addition to his pastoral duties, he actively engaged in the reduction of social and national relations between the Polish-speaking and German-speaking population.
On January 22, 1945, Red Army soldiers invaded the rectory. Chmielewski was long tortured, pierced with bayonets, finally thrown alive through the window to the stairs and shot. A few days after the death, the poorest inhabitants of Klebarka Wielki buried him next to the statue of Our Lady, which stands opposite the parish house.
On September 15, 2007, the Metropolitan of Warmia Archbishop Wojciech Ziemba opened the beatification process concerning the Martyrs of the Second World War - the victims of Nazism and communism. Among 28 priests of Warmia, one sister and 5 lay people, Fr. Paweł Chmielewski. November 5, 2011 ended the diocesan stage of the beatification process.
