Christoph Demantius
Christoph Demantius (born December 15, 1567 in Liberec, died April 20, 1643 in Freiberg) is a German composer, music theorist.
He was educated initially in his hometown, later in Wittenberg and Leipzig. In 1597 he became a teacher of music in Żytawa (his student was the future composer Melchior Franck). In 1604 he became the canton of the cathedral in Freiberg, Saxony, and held this post for the rest of his life.
He was the author of church songs, but also of lay compositions. In his choral work he modeled on the compositions of Orlando di Lasso. Among the preserved compositions of Demantius is particularly noteworthy is the six-voice Passion of St. John for the vocal ensemble a capella, one of the best works of the peak of this musical form (choral passion).
As a music theorist Demantius is the author of the first German-language dictionary of musical terms. Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
