Joseph Thomson (born 14 February 1858 in Penpont, died 2 August 1895 in London) is a Scottish traveler. He completed his studies at the University of Edinburgh. In 1878 he became a participant in an expedition organized by the Royal Geographical Society, whose task was to explore the Dar es Salaam road to Lake Niasa.
In 1878 the Society entrusted him with the mission of exploring the road from the east coast to Lake Victoria through a land inhabited by the Masai. It was the last region of East Africa not so far penetrated by Europeans. The expedition set off in March 1883 and returned to Mombasa at the turn of March 1884 after completing the task. In England and Scotland he was feted as one of the greatest explorers.
He participated in expeditions along the Niger River in 1885, Moroccan Atlas Mountains in 1888, and in 1890 he was hired by Cecil Rhodes to negotiate treaties and agreements with tribal chiefs in Central Africa.
