Armenia under his rule was a weak and divided country between the two neighboring powers of Rome and Persia. Arshak II, who ruled the Roman Armenia, sought to maintain neutrality and gain independence for his country by skillfully maneuvering between the two Powers. He married the Roman princess of Olympia.

In 367 Armenia was attacked by Szapura II. The Romans did not help, and Arshak II did not have the resources to repel the invasion of the Persians, who persecuted the Christian Armenians by converting them into zoroastrianism by force. Invited by King Szapura II for peace talks was taken. He committed suicide while he was in Persian captivity.
