Data Protection Officer (sometimes also referred to as Data Protection Officer) - a person appointed by any institution or body of the European Union to ensure the application of Regulation No 45/2001 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 18 December 2000 on the protection of persons in the context of the processing of personal data by the Community institutions and bodies and on the free movement of such data. In addition, he advises data administrators on their compliance with their data protection obligations. She is independent in the performance of her duties.

The Data Protection Officer may be appointed for a term of 2 to 5 years. It is possible to re-elect the same person as an inspector with the proviso that he or she can not serve for more than 10 years. Any institution or body that appoints an inspector (or inspectors) shall report it to the register maintained by the European Data Protection Supervisor.
