Ret, upper stratus sandstone - stratigraphic stratigraphic unit of the Triassic established in Poland outside the Carpathians and Germany (outside the Alps) based on lithostratigraphic criteria. It is the tallest part of sandstone, aged at the end of the early Triassic. It lies below the shell limestone.
Ret in relation to the lower parts of mottle sandstone are characterized by a much greater proportion of limestone and dolomite, which upward share is dominant. In addition, there are numerous shoals of reddish sandstone and mudstone and clay. There are lenses and even deposits (in Germany) of gypsum and anhydrite.
Retu formations were formed during the gradual transgression of the sea, in the environment of the coastal plain, temporarily flooded by minor sea level rise, and in certain periods exposed. This is a sebhy environment. In these works there are quite numerous, though not varied sea fauna, mainly snails, mussels and rare ammonites. There are also many clues of extinct amphibians and reptiles.
In Poland the best retreats are located in the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, where red sandstones are often used in quarries mainly for the manufacture of cladding boards for buildings. Numerous exposures, partially exploited (dolomites), are also found in Upper Silesia. Bibliography
