Rudolf Buchheim
Rudolf Buchheim (born 1 March 1820 in Bautzen, died 25 December 1879 in Gießen) is a German pharmacologist.
In 1845 he received his doctorate at the University of Leipzig and soon afterwards became a professor at the University of Dorpaty. At this university he founded the first department of pharmacology. In 1867 he became professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Gießen. Buchheim was a pioneer in experimental pharmacology. He is attributed to transforming pharmacology from empirical medical practice into a strictly scientific field. He introduced biological experience as a research method and developed a methodology for quantifying and treating the chemical properties.
During his studies in Leipzig Buchheim he translated into German pharmacology manual Jonathan Pereira. He did his updating and improvement by adding one chapter. His famous pupil was Oswald Schmiedeberg, who also laid the foundations for modern pharmacology.
