Irrenschloss in 1864
Irrenschloss - a common name for the city of mental illness and epilepsy (Anstalt für Irre und Epileptische) in Frankfurt am Main, founded by Heinrich Hoffman, director of the institution from 1851 to 1888. Irrenschloss was located on the outskirts of the city, now in the district of Frankfurt-Westend. Hoffman's successor was Emil Sioli; At that time, Professor Alois Alzheimer was working on a disease known today as Alzheimer's.
Since 1922, the plant was renamed Städtische und Universitätsklinik für Gemüts- und Nervenkranke and moved to the Niederrad district.
Irrenschloss then belonged to the IG Farben, and after 1945 was the seat of the US armed forces. It was then transferred to the University of Frankfurt am Main.
