Joseph Hecker
Józef Hecker (born 1780 in Prague (Czech Republic), died in the beginning of the second half of the 19th century) is a Galician pioneer of the oil industry.
Mining technician and controller in Eastern Galicia in the region of Truskawa, Modrycza, Słubody Rungurska, Stebnik, Nowosielica, Kosovo, Myszyny. He looked for lead ore, zinc, sulfur; mainly brine. During these classes he encountered the deposits of earth wax and rock oil. Based on the Austrian mining law, he founded and carried out mining activities with Salin officials Jan Mitis and Francis Schneider. In the years 1810-1814 they conducted large-scale distillation of rock oil to obtain asphalt. As a result of the distillation, they received an illuminated by-product. This distillery illuminated the town of Prague, the barracks in Sambor, the mines in Truskavets and the Viennese railway.
He is the author of the memoirs Das Bergohl in Galizien in the journal of the Vienna Technical University Jahrbucher k.u.k. Polytechnischen Instituts in Wien 1820. This is the oldest in the history of oil processing, a document that highlights the use of the distillate for lighting purposes and the way it is extracted. These are historical backgrounds and works of art on a new kind of lighting. Bibliography
