The first Olympic success was at the Salt Lake City Games, where she won the gold medal in the 4x5 km relay. During the Olympic Games in Turin Nystad won silver medals in the relay and sprint in any technique. In 2010, at the Vancouver Olympics, Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle won the gold medal in the team sprint with free throws and silver in a 4x5 km relay.

At the Val di Fiemme World Championship she won the gold medal in the relay race and the silver in the sprint technique. In addition, she won silver medals in the optional team sprint and in the 4x5 km relay at the Sapporo World Cup, and at the Liberec championship the German relay team from Nystad in the team repeated the result with Sapporo again winning the World Cup.

The best results in the World Cup came in the 2004/2005 season, when it finished 5th overall in the overall classification and sprint ranking. In addition, she won a silver medal in the 5 km freestyle at the Junior World Championships in Santorini in 1998.
