Cape Flissingski (Russian: мыс Флиссингский) - cape in Russia, on New Earth. It is the easternmost place in Europe. On older topographic maps, there is a small island just northeast of the cape, the current satellite images do not confirm its existence. Flissingski's cape was discovered in 1596 during a Dutch expedition (in search of the northern passage to India) led by Willem Barents. Shortly after the lap of the expedition, the expedition ship was brewing into the ice, crew members were forced to land (on the map of Atlas van Loon drawn from the Barents expedition at the end of the explored coast, the frozen Barents ship was shown and the house where the expedition had spent the winter). After spending the winter they built two boats and headed back and forth around the cape. During this return, the Barents died on the western shore of the North Island of the New Earth. (Cape Flissingski is the easternmost point of this island.)
