Society of National Antiquities Collectors

The Society of the Collectors of Antiquities is an archaeological society, which was founded in 1841 in Szamotuły. It was headed by Jędrzej Moraczewski, who drafted the statute, where we read that the Society had been established "in order to accumulate antiquities in one place, already in the hidden land, already in the corners, to enlarge the lists of rare prints and gather images of the earlier life to discover the monuments scattered across the country, to compose local novels and to serve the people ".

The statute included, among other things, that "every member having on his estate a mound, a mound [...], a pagan [...] pre-Christian cemetery, or grief, or grave, or any expansion of the old castle. .] is obliged to report it. " Documentation was prepared, digging at the expense of the Society and collecting monuments and memorabilia in the office connected with the library. <

The company has actually started work since the beginning of 1841. The director was Jędrzej Moraczewski, deputy Emil Kierski, and secretary of Apolinary Yellow. At the peak of its activity, the Society consisted of 38 people.

The Society's collections did not grow to a larger size and were housed in a single closet. The development of the organization prevented political events in 1846. At the request of the higher authority, the councilor of Szamotuły County dissolved the Society, allowing only a meeting to decide on its property, which had been deposited in the parish church in Szamotuły. It was only after several years that the collections were reorganized for the Society of Friends of Science in Poznan. Bibliography
