Sykion
Location of Sykionu (northwest of Corinth. Sykion or Sikion (Greek: Σικυώνα Sikyōn, Latin Sicyon) is a Greek city in the north of the Peloponnese, on the Asopos River, close to the Corinthian Gulf. Politically it did not play a large role and remained dependent on Argos or Sparta. The capital of a small country that bordered Arcadia, Acha and the territory of Corinth and Fliuntu. The legendary King Ajgialeos was the founder of the city.
During the First Messine War (8th century BC), Sykion was on the side of Argos, while during the Second Messinian War he prospered under the tyranny of the Orthagonid dynasty (675-590 BC), founded by Ortagoras. After the death of the last of them, Klejstenes, in Sykion, the republican regime took over. During the Second Peloponnese War (431-404 BC), the Corinthian War of 394 BC and the wars with thebes in 371 p.n.e. the city was allied with Sparta. In year 303 p.n.e. Sykion was demolished by Demetrios Polioketes, who rebuilt it near the ruined one.
Sykion was the birthplace of Lizypa, as well as Aratos, who set his city at the head of the Achaean League, giving him part of the territory of Corinth with the presidency of the Isthmus. In year 23, the Sikion was destroyed by an earthquake.
