Afonso de Paiva

Afonso de Paiva (born around 1460, died around 1490), a Portuguese courtier from the Canary Islands, is often sent on secret diplomatic missions to North Africa, thanks to his knowledge of Arabic and local areas. Together with Pedro de Covilhão he set out on the orders of King John II to find the legendary Christian papa John.

From the moment he left his companion in Aden, every trace of him would disappear. Covilhao did not find Paiva in Cairo, where they had an appointment of about 1490. Probably Afonso de Paiva died during a lonely journey to papa Jan who turned out to be Ethiopia. Bibliography
