Rudolfs Ciemins


Rūdolfs Ciemiņš (born March 24, 1897 in Zvartava, Latvia, on the border of Russia, died February 14, 1945 in Dresden) - Latvian military officer (lieutenant colonel), prefect of the city of Dyneburg, then commander of the 2nd Latvian Border Regiment during World War II. On December 28, 1918, he joined the newly formed Latvian army, taking the rank of lieutenant. From May 1919 he served in the 5th Independent Battalion. In August of this year he was promoted to Lieutenant. From September 1919 to 1921 he was an officer in the 8th Infantry Regiment in Dyneburg. In 1921 he was awarded the rank of captain. By 1922 he was serving in the Latvian Guerrilla Regiment and was assigned to the 1st Infantry Regiment in Liepaja. In 1932 he was promoted to lieutenant colonel. From 1932 to October 1934 he was an authorizing officer in the 1st Infantry Regiment. Until April 2, 1938 he was the head of the military region of Jaunlatgale, until June 25, 1940 - the Abrene region, and until October this year - the Jelgava-Bauska region. After the occupation of Latvia by the German army in 1941, he cooperated with the occupying forces. By August of that year he was the commandant of Gaujien, and until 1943 the prefect of Daugavpils. From February to May 18, 1944 he commanded 2 Latvian SS Border Regiments in the Waffen-Obersturmbannführer der SS, and was discharged from military service. In the face of the coming Red Army in the summer of 1944, he left for Germany, where he was killed during the great bombing of Dresden on February 14, 1945.

He was decorated with Latvian Order of the Three Stars of the 5th Class and the Russian Order of St. Anny 4 class.
