In Wroclaw, Doms was educated in the merchant trade. At the beginning of the nineteenth century he came to Raciborz, where he started working in the merchant family Galli. He married her daughter, Joanna, with whom he had four children.

In 1811, the activity of Józef Doms began in Racibórz. In 1823 bought a neighboring house, which was greatly expanded. In the yard of the house at the Market Square, he built the first tobacco factory in the city. That is the new branch of the tobacco industry in Racibórz. After thirty years, the factory employing 15 employees produced 150 tons of snuff worth 40 thousand thalers. The sons of Józef, Henryk, Juliusz and Leon built in 1854 at ul. Chopin factory bigger snuff, because the plant could not handle the demand. However, the new factory turned out to be too small, so in 1871 it was built at today's ul. Reymonta another, much larger, some of which survived to this day. Increasing production has prompted owners to transform the company into a commercial law firm. Józef Doms Franciszek's brother bought a competing factory Breibarth & What. on Ostrógu in 1889. Later, the mill was bought over Psinką and the whole was enlarged. In 1901 the production of smoking tobacco began. Doms began to produce cigarettes brand Freiherr v. Eichendorff, which was sold in metal boxes, where she was a poet from his monument in Racibórz.

In 1911, Domes, the then owner of the company, Franciszek Doms, at the same time Mr. Paweł, gave the town a few hectare park stretching from the factory walls to the Odra River.

The production of snuff initiated by Józef Doms gave rise to the tobacco industry in Racibórz. Doms was not limited to the homogeneous activity of his snuff factory. In 1833, he started a rakeshop, a strong alcohol produced from sugarcane and rice, with an annual output of 6,000 liters.

In 1839, Józef Doms built Dębicz (Raciborz district), the first steam turbine of a highly efficient American system in Upper Silesia, driven by a high-pressure steam engine. Good quality flour was exported to Wroclaw and the Congress Kingdom and to the Austrian Empire. In 1850 a mill was built next to the mill, also powered by steam locomotive.

Józef Doms was also the owner of the Rydułtowy-Anna mine in Pszów and a shareholder of the Katowice "Baildon" steelworks. Bibliography Authoritative control (person):
