Piotr Mścisławiec

Piotr Mścisławiec - printer working in Moscow 1563 (?) - 1565, in Zabrze 1567-1569, in Vilnius 1569 (?) - 1577. Curriculum vitae

The date of birth or exact date of Mścisławca's death is unknown. The biographies of the person of Mścisław are derived mainly from a number of descriptions, which are printed and from the file of the process with Mamonicz in Vilnius. The source of silence is that a number of legends have emerged around Mścisławiec. They relate especially to his origin and life span before appearing in Moscow. The sound of the printer's name allows him to determine the place of his origin (or his father) - probably Mscislav, located in Mogilev, Belarus (Peter calls himself "Mstislav's son").

According to Iljaszewicz (and other historians), Piotr, as a young boy, moved to Vilnius and learned to print in the outhouse of Francis Skorny. Then he traveled as a traveling printer in the 1950s to Novgorod, from where he was brought to Moscow. Here he cooperated with Ivan Fedorov until 1565, when both of them had to go to Lithuania.

The departure from Moscow was probably shortly after October 29, 1565, after the end of the last Moscow print, The Verb. At the end of that same year or early next year, the printers were in Vilnius, where they were presented to King Zygmunt August and senators. At the invitation of Grzegorz Chodkiewicz they moved to his estate, Zabludow, to organize a printing house. They came to Zabludow as early as 1567. The printing company was brief. Mścisławiec left Zabłudów already in 1569. Some scholars (Abramowicz) see the reasons for leaving in the misunderstandings that separated them. However, closer to the truth seems to think that Mścisławca made the departure of favorable proposals Mamonicz, with whom the contacts could be facilitated by the origin of the same Belarussian land. Mammon also came from Mogilevskaya, and Łukasz was married to the castellan of Mścisław, Barbara the Warrior.

In Vilnius, Piotr Tymofiejewicz was acting at the side of Mamonicz for 8 years. The latest news of it comes from the process of the process that took place in 1576-1577.

Since after the process there was a break in the printing business, some people were inclined to guess that the stagnation caused the death of Mstislav. However, Iljaszewicz expresses a different view. According to him, Peter could have fled Vilnius and had to work in some other press. Bibliography
