Dolní Věstonice (stanowisko archeologiczne)

Venus from Lower Věstonice

Dolní Věstonice - an archaeological site near the village of Dolní Věstonice in Moravia (Czech Republic). One of the most famous archaeological sites in Central Europe. The age of the oldest mammoth hunting camps there is estimated to be 28,000 years old.

In 1937, there was found a radial bone of a young wolf with regular flint cuts, which might indicate early attempts to measure and count. This bone contains 57 incisions, the first of which is grouped after 5 incisions of equal length. It may refer to counting up to five fingers in a hand. The bone is about 30-25 thousand years old.
