Herb hrabiów of Merano The family of Counts von Meran, descends from the Archduke John (died 1859, the uncle of the Austrian Emperor Ferdinand I) and his morganatic wife - Anna Maria Plochl (died 1885). Breaking the rules of the imperial family (the married couple had to be born high enough), he married a loving daughter of the postmaster. This has led to an enormous popularity.

In 1848, during the Spring of Nations, he was elected Reich administrator. It was a prelude to the unification of Germany, but in fact the archduke did not have great powers. Bibliography Authority control (noble family):
