Gabriel the Cloud


Gabriel Chmura (born 1946 in Wrocław) - Polish conductor.

In 1957 the Chmur family went to Israel. At the Tel Aviv Conservatory in 1964-1968 Gabriel Chmura studied conducting, piano and composition. In the following years he continued his education under the direction of Pierre Dervaux in Paris and Hans Swarowsky in Vienna. His conducting career earned him his first prize at the Besançon (1970), the Herbert von Karajan Competition in Berlin (1971) and the Golden Medal at the La Scala Opera in Milan (1971). For over a dozen or so years he led orchestras in Germany (Aachen, Bochum) and in Canada (Ottawa). In opera he made his debut in 1974 with Otell Giuseppe Verdi in Munich. In the years 2001-2007 he was the artistic director of the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. Currently he cooperates with the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw and Poznań, where he is an artistic director.

Among the numerous recordings of Clouds are records for Chandos with works by Mieczysław Wajnberg. Wajnberg's opera Passenger Cloud conducted in Warsaw, and introduced the opera Portrait to the repertoire of the Grand Theater in Poznan.
