Pentti Aalto


Pentti Aalto (born July 22, 1917 in Pori, died November 30, 1998 in Helsinki) is a Finnish linguist, specializing mainly in Latvian (especially Mongolian) languages.

In the years 1935-1939 he studied classical languages, Sanskrit, historical-comparative linguistics and Altai languages ​​at the University of Helsinki. After completing his studies he served in the army until 1944, where as a cryptographer (cracker) in the period 1941-1944 he reached the rank of lieutenant. He then completed his education at the University of Uppsala (1945-1947). In 1949 he obtained his doctorate on the basis of a dissertation on gerundas and Latin gerunds. During his doctoral dissertation lectio praecursoria gave a lecture on the use of statistics in language studies.

In the following years, he contributed to the elaboration and publication of numerous manuscripts remaining after the death of his scientific master Gustaf John Ramstedt. In 1958, Aalto was awarded the title of Associate Professor in comparative linguistics. After passing Martti Räsänen, professor of turkology, retired in 1963. Aalto has also taken up the management of Altai Philology in Helsinki.

He went on a number of scientific expeditions: to Mongolia (1957, 1959, 1970, 1973), India (1964, 1968, 1972), Turkmenistan (1972) and Korea (1979). He is also credited with the education of Finnish personnel. He was also active as secretary of the Finnish Orientalist Society (1947-1956) and Société Finno-Ougrienne (1956-1965).

For the series The history of learning and science in Finland, 1828-1918 he wrote three volumes: the history of orientalism (1971), the history of classical philology (1980) and the history of neo-philology (1987) in Helsinki.
