Tomás Hirsch


Tomás Hirsch (2005) Tomás René Hirsch Goldschmidt (born July 26, 1956 in Santiago) is a Chilean businessman and leftist politician, leader of the Humanist Party of Chile, candidate for president of the country in 1999 and 2005. He was born into a family of German Jews who had taken refuge in Chile before persecution of the Nazis. In 1974 he began his studies at the civil engineering faculty of the University of Chile in Santiago, but he broke off after four years without obtaining a diploma. He started working at his brother's photography company. As an opponent of the regime, Pinochet was co-founder of the Chilean Humanist Party (1983), leading to her legalization as the first opposition party since the 1973 coup. In the years 1994-1999 he was chairman of the party. He was one of the founders of the Democratic Party Coalition and served as Chilean ambassador to New Zealand in the years 1990-1992. In 1993, it led to the withdrawal of the Humanist Party from the Democratic Party Coalition. On behalf of the Humanist Party he ran unsuccessfully for the deputies in 1997 and the president in 1999 and 2005.
