C-Fos
c-Fos - cell protooncogen, belonging to the genes of early cellular response. It encodes the FOS transcription factor, which, like the other Fos-FosB, Fra-1 and Fra-2 proteins, contains a leucine slider motif that allows them to form with the Jun family of proteins, as well as Maf, Nrl, and ATF, heterodimers functioning as nuclear Transcriptional factor AP-1 (activator protein-1). Transcription of the c-phosal gene increases with various stress factors (UV radiation, oxidative stress, heavy metals).
The human c-Fos gene is located on chromosome 14 (14q24.3), has a length of about 4,000 pairs and contains three introns. It is a V-homologue of the FBJ mouse osteosarcoma virus.
