Echetlos

Echetlos (Ἔχετλος) - a mysterious Attic heroine associated with the Battle of the Marathon. The story of Echetlos was given by Pausanias. I 15.4, 32.4].

The inhabitants of the Marathon were worshiped as heroes not only of his heroine-eponim Maraton, but also of all those killed in the battle with the Persians. Besides, they worshiped Echetlos, whom they told Pausanians.

Echetlos appeared during the battle in a peasant's outfit. No one among the fighters knew him. He killed many Persians with his plow, and after the battle he disappeared without a word.

Amazed, the Athenians turned to the oracle, asking who the figure was. The Oracle does not reply. She recommended, however, the cult of heros Echetlajos (from ἐχέτλη - "seed of the plow").

Echetlos has been portrayed as one of the central characters in one of the paintings in The Stooges, depicting the Battle of the Marathon. This painting was given by Pausanias. 15.4], and Herodotus [Herod. VI 114].

Robert Browning, Echetlos, was cast in the character of Echetlos (Dramatic Idylls, Second Series, 1880). Bibliography
