Kankan, cancan - French dance from the second half of the nineteenth century, the origin of uncertain. According to one of the hypotheses he developed from a cadre, according to another he was originally a caricature of Negro dances, there is also the assumption that brought back from France by Algiers soldiers. He is accompanied by music very fast, in the rhythm of the gallop, in the 2/4 meter.
Following a rapid career in France, at the end of the nineteenth century, the kankan spread rapidly also in other countries. Jacques Offenbach introduced him to his operettas (including Orpheus in hell). Kankan was created by young brides / grooms who wore their dresses and danced in the cities for entertainment and "get-togethers"; His popularity was established by the Parisian variétés. The acrobatic figures, such as the twist, the star, the throw of the straight leg, are characteristic for this dance. Initially, it raised the morale of the defenders.
