Magdalene Islands


Magdalene Islands <Îles de la Madeleine (Magdalen Islands) - a small archipelago of islands in the Bay of Saint Lawrence in Canada. Territories belong to the province of Quebec, although geographically these islands are closer to the province of Nova Scotia, mainly due to the ethnic origin of the inhabitants and to the dominant French language. Their total area is 205.53 km². The first European on the islands was Jacques Cartier arrived here in 1534. The first settlements of these areas by French settlers took place in 1755 after the Akadian deportation (see Akadia, Akademia) from Nova Scotia. Port wyspie Cap-aux-Meules

Today the islands are inhabited by 12,824 people, the English speaking population is a small minority. The island economy is largely based on tourism.
