Water Framework Directive

Directive 2000/60 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000 establishing a framework for Community action in the field of water policy (Water Framework Directive, WFD) - Directive 2000/60 / EC laying down and coordinating existing European water legislation, It is designed to protect water from pollution at its source.

The main objective of the Water Framework Directive is to achieve good water status, ie at least good ecological status and good chemical status by 2015. The waters covered by the WFD are inland waterways, including groundwater, and transient waters and coastal waters.

To this end, the WFD establishes a basin management system, independent of the administrative division of the Member States, as well as in the case of cross-border catchments, requires co-operation between neighboring states. According to the WFD, active participation of all interested parties is required for proper water management. The Directive provides for the reduction and control of pollution and balances the use of water with the protection of the environment.

The Water Framework Directive establishes requirements for water quality monitoring. In the case of surface waters, not only the purity of the waters but their ecological status is assessed, which is based on the biocoenoses phytoplankton, phytobenthos, macrophytes, zoobenthos and ichthiofauna, while abiotic habitat parameters (physicochemical and hydromorphological elements) are ancillary. Classical cleanliness is investigated in chemical monitoring.
