Delta Senegal

Delta Senegal (Delta du Fleuve Sénégal) - Senegal's inland delta and geographic region along the borders of Senegal and Mauritania, in 2005 recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve under the name of the International Biosphere Reserve of the Delta of Senegal. The river flows through the vast lowlands of Senegal and branches into smaller branches, creating numerous backwaters and river beds. The legs are later joined back into one trough and descend to the Atlantic Ocean near Saint Louis. In the delta area of Senegal, many protected areas are located (including the Oiseaux du Djoudj National Park in Senegal and the Diawling National Park in Mauritania and numerous reserves). It is one of the most remote areas of sub-Saharan Africa with permanent water reservoirs, thus stopping migratory birds migrating over the Sahara. The delta of Senegal also supplies cultivated fields, enabling the local population (mostly Wolofom, Fulan and Maurom) to keep themselves from farming. Bibliography
