Governor-General


General governor - in Russia in 1775-1917 the administrator of the province (general-governorate), directly subordinate to the tsar.

After the successive administrative reforms of the 40 General-Governors (1782) remained in the 2nd half of the 19th century (Moscow, Warsaw, Kiev, Turkmen, Steppe, Irkutsk, Nadamursk). According to the instructions from 1853 (valid until 1917) their main task was to provide "order and social security". At the same time they were commanders of the local military districts. After the February Revolution of 1917 they were replaced by the Commissioners or collegial committees of the Provisional Government. In 1813, Alexander I Romanov established the General-Governor of the Duchy of Warsaw. In 1815 it was replaced by the governor of the Kingdom of Poland. In 1874, Alexander II Romanov appointed the General-Governor of Warsaw. Bibliography
