James Eric Drummond


James Eric Drummond James Eric Drummond, 16th Earl Perth (born 17 August 1876 in York, died December 15, 1951 in Rogate) is a British diplomat, first Secretary General of the League of Nations in 1919-1933, then Ambassador of Great Britain in Italy. Member of the House of Lords.

He came from an aristocratic Scottish family, graduated from Eton College. From 1900 he worked in British diplomacy, including the personal secretary of foreign ministers: Edward Gray and Arthur Balfour. He participated in the talks of the peace conference in Paris. After the creation of the League of Nations, Wilson was proposed by her first Secretary General. He served this function until 1933.

In the years 1933-1939 he was the ambassador of Great Britain in Italy. He tried to weaken Mussolini's relationship with Hitler, and in 1938 led to the conclusion by the United Kingdom and Italy of an agreement on the civil war in Spain and the Italian colonial expansion in East Africa. On his return to the UK, he served as chief of staff of the Ministry of Information. From 1941 he was a member of the House of Lords, from 1946 until his death as deputy chairman of the Liberal Party Club. Bibliography
