Kumu chan
Kumu chan (枯木 禅 枯木 )
It was the style of teaching of Master Shishuang Xingkong, also known as Shishuang Qingzhu, who relied on a very strict discipline, unmatched among the free Chinese monks. The Shishuanga School was a strange thing and, therefore, quite pejoratively named for the stumps, and the master's students referred to Shishuang as the stumps. They had to sit quite motionless, like dry trunks of trees.
This style in China was practiced mostly in the caodong school. Famous masters like Kumu Facheng and his pupil were famous, although not heir, Shitou Xiqian.
This style is associated today with the Japanese zin rinzai, which although it was a transfer of the Chinese tradition of the line, it was soon stiffened by the samurai spirit of the Japanese.
