Lurleen Wallace
Lurleen Burns Wallace (born September 19, 1926, May 7, 1968) is an American politician, first wife of US politician George Wallace, the only woman elected governor of Alabama.
According to the 1960s, Alabama's popular Governor George Wallace could not run for governor in 1966. But he found a way to circumvent the rules - he persuaded his wife to stand and gained the support of the Democratic Party for such a solution. Lurleen Wallace was elected governor and on January 16, 1967 formally took office.
In the short term, she was loyal to her husband's policies, but she also reported her own initiatives. State funding for psychiatric treatment. Shortly after taking office, she was diagnosed with cancer. She died in May 1968, and her husband soon lost influence in the state - Lurleen Wallace replaced Albert Brewer (former deputy governor), who ran an independent policy.
Her name was Lurleen, one of the lakes in central Alabama.
