Remi Shrines


Remi Schrijnen (born December 24, 1921 in Kumtich, Belgium, July 27, 2006 in Hagen, Germany) - Flemish nationalist activist, NCO volunteer during World War II

In the 1930s he was involved in the activities of the Flemish nationalists. He joined the Flemish National Union (VNV). He participated in street fights with members of Verdinaso. During the German occupation he entered the Voluntary Flemish Legion on October 4, 1942. Colleagues called it "Strumpf-Deutscher". He served in the anti-tank submarine as a gunner. 75 mm. He showed great courage during the heavy fighting at Leningrad in February 1943. He was promoted to the Unterscharführer der Waffen-SS. During the Battle of Narva in March 1944, he personally destroyed 7 Soviet tanks T-34 and IS-2; he was injured. He was taken to Swinoujscie and then to Berlin. He was honored there as the only Flamand Knight of the Iron Cross. He also received a congratulatory telegram from VNV leader Hendrik Elias. After the war ended, he returned to Belgium where he was arrested and sentenced to death after being sentenced to a long prison term. In 1950, however, he was released. He participated in the so-called. Amnesty marches, whose participants demanded the exemption from the prisoners of collaborators fighting on the eastern front. After one such march in 1953, he was again arrested and sentenced to almost 2 years in prison. In 1962 he settled in Germany and obtained German citizenship.
