Slum in Jakarta, Indonesia Slum in Glasgow in 1871 Slums - a region of cities inhabited by poor people (most often immigrants or from rural areas). Such areas are most common in the major Third World (eg Africa, India, South America).

The name "slums" is derived from nineteenth-century British industrial cities, where more than 60% of the city's area was occupied by crowded residential areas, often with very low standards of living.

Today, most of the buildings in the slums are makeshift constructions built of what the inhabitants have found (eg boards, boxes, corrugated sheets). Slums are usually devoid of hardened roads, electricity, sewage and running water. Often real organized crime groups are organized in such neighborhoods.

Slum neighborhoods are sometimes also called neighborhoods in wealthy and highly developed countries where the poor live. Most often, these are large clusters of people living in tall buildings, in areas devoid of greenery, etc.
