Voldemārs Veiss (born 7 November 1899 in Riga, died 16 April 1944 in the USSR) - Latvian military lieutenant colonel (lieutenant colonel), deputy general director of interior affairs in Latvian self-government and then commander of 1st Voluntary Regiment 2 Latvian SS Brigade, entire Brigade and Divisional Infantry of the 19th SS Grenadier Division during World War II
In 1919 he volunteered for the newly formed Latvian army, taking part in the struggle for independence of Latvia. During military service he reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. After the occupation of Latvia by the German army in 1941, he collaborated with the occupying forces. In July he was at the head of the Latvian self-defense forces, but they were dissolved by the Germans at the end of this month. In their place was the Latvian auxiliary police with V. Veiss as the commanding officer. At the end of 1941, he assumed the position of Deputy General Director of Internal Affairs in the Latvian Self-Government headed by General Oskars Dankers. From the end of April 1943, he was the commander of the 1st Volunteer Regiment in the 2nd Latvian Volunteer Brigade at the Legion-Obersturmbannführer SS. In September of this year he was awarded the Iron Cross of the 1st Class, and in October he was promoted to the Legion-Standartenführer der SS and became commander of the brigade infantry. From January 1944 he commanded the Battle Group "Veiss" (Kampfgruppe "Veiss"). As the first Latvian in the German service, he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In March of this year he became commander of the divisional infantry of the newly formed 19th Grenadier Division SS. On April 16, he died at the front after the grenade explosion.
