Column phase

Column phase - A family of liquid crystal phases, where there is far-reaching array ordering in the form of columns.
The column phase is usually generated by rigid disk-shaped particles. These particles, in appropriate conditions (temperature, pressure) are spontaneously arranged in long columns resembling stacks of coins. These columns can be further organized into a type of grid, the type of which is the basis for the division of the column phases:
The first material that generated the columnar phase was discovered in 1977 by Hindu chemist Sivaramakrishna Chandrasekhar. He discovered that the benzene derivative containing six alkyl groups generated a new kind of liquid crystal phase.
Column-phase materials found to be used as dry channel electrolytes in which anisotropic conductivity occurs due to ion flow along columns and inability to flow "across". Bibliography
